Our Philosophy | Vision

Hapaitia te ara tika punau ai te rangatiratanga mo nga uri whakatipu.

Foster the pathway of knowledge to strength, independence and growth for future generations.

The Ministry of Education ECE curriculum – Te Whāriki is the holistic bicultural framework that underpins Methven Preschool’s local curriculum. Our core values are whakamana – empowering, manaakitanga – respect, pono – honesty – doing things right, and whanaungatanga – kinship and aroha/love.

Literacy, numeracy, science, social sciences, arts, and physical components are interwoven throughout the learning environment. Kaiako facilitate and adapt the environment and pedagogy to support learning, and development across the curriculum using intentional teaching practices that value tamariki as independent active learners. Tamariki contribute to their own learning to become competent and confident life-long learners. We are committed to the ‘Move to Learn’ approach that ensures tamariki have all they need as they learn to move their bodies, develop their brains and build foundations they will need for a lifetime of learning.

Kaiako provide tamariki with opportunities to encourage positive attitudes to culture and language identity, and to develop skills, and interests in order to grow hauora – emotional, physical wellbeing, and a sense of wairua that celebrates tamariki as treasured taonga.

Te Tiriti o Waitiangi is an integral component of our curriculum Tikanga Māori, mātauranga Māori and tea o Māori are woven throughout our daily practice, and kaiako strive to korero te reo Māori within our environment.

Building strong relationships/nga hononga is central to the way we shape the environment. By nurturing tamariki and whānau to feel a strong sense of mana/belonging in the environment, and celebrating diversity with a sensitive, multifaceted approach we promote the well-being of our tamariki and the diverse families represented in our community. This strong sense of whanaungatanga is enhanced through our participation in wider community activities.

Kaikio are committed and proactive, reflecting on practice in order to learn and grow and to meet the changing needs and aspirations of our tamariki, whanau and our ever evolving society.

Kaiako consciously foster sustainable practices to empower tamariki to construct knowledge and develop appreciation of the environment.

Methven Preschool is an active member of Opuke Kahui Ako\community of Learning, working collaboratively with other ECE providers and schools to strengthen the future learning pathway for tamariki.
